Run a Yankee Swap turn order

Yankee Swap and Dirty Santa are unwrap-and-steal games. Hosts need a fair first-player order more than a Secret Santa circle. Shuffle once, then pick when rules allow a steal.

Paste guest names, shuffle the unwrap order, then use Pick when someone may steal. Same flow as white elephant—worded for Yankee Swap / Dirty Santa searches.

Yankee Swap vs Secret Santa

Secret Santa assigns private gifters in a circle—use the Secret Santa tool. Yankee Swap is public: people unwrap or steal in order. This page is for the public game.

White elephant is the same family of games; that list page covers similar flow with slightly different wording for searchers.

Suggested house rules before you shuffle

Set a price cap, a max steals per gift, and whether the first person may steal at the end. Then shuffle and stick to the order so the room trusts the draw.

How to use this list

  1. 1

    Paste guests

    One name per wrapped gift.

  2. 2

    Shuffle unwrap order

Display the sequence on a shared screen.

  3. 3

    Pick for steals

When rules need a random chooser, switch to Pick.

Tips for this scenario

  • Number gifts 1–N on paper; the site orders people, not boxes.
  • Exclusions belong in Secret Santa, not usually in Yankee Swap.
  • Link to white elephant if your group uses that name instead.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dirty Santa the same as Yankee Swap?

Often yes—regional names for unwrap-and-steal. Use this page for turn order either way.

Should I use Secret Santa mode?

Only if you want hidden givers. For steal games, stay on Shuffle and Pick.

Can couples sit out consecutive turns?

Shuffle does not enforce that—swap two lines after the draw if hosts prefer.
